Uzbekistan plans to introduce tax free in all tourist centers

Uzbek authorities returned to the idea of introducing tax free in all tourist centers

The Uzbek authorities intend to introduce a tax free system in all tourist centers, according to the press service of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
“An order has been given to work on the issue of organizing a VAT refund system for foreign tourists for purchases in all tourist cities,” the press service said.
According to the press service, tax free will be launched first in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara.

Back in November 2018, the State Committee for Tourism Development of Uzbekistan (now the Ministry of Tourism and Sports) announced its intention to develop a shopping destination for travelers, in particular through the introduction of tax free. In July 2019, Mirziyoyev instructed relevant agencies to develop procedures for the system, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, its introduction was delayed.
According to the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan, the number of foreign tourists who visited the republic in 2020 decreased almost 1.8 times compared to 2019, to 1.5 million people. In January-September this year, the flow of foreign visitors dropped to 1.136 million (minus 16.1 percent).
