Garm-Chashma travel guide

Garm-Chashma is a hot mineral spring situated at an elevation of 2,325 m above sea level. Garm-Chashma runs through the Ishkashim District of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province in Tajikistan. It is located on the western slope of the Shakhdara Range.

The spring is a few thousand years old. This is the minimum duration required for the disposition of such enormous travertine sediments. The deposits further cascade down to the Garm-Chashma River. A curved bank that is 1.5 km long, 35-45 m wide and has the bright white, yellowish and reddish brown cascade falling from a height of 7 to 35 metres lines strictly along the crest of the ridge.

Structure And Formation Of The Spring

A series of small and large fountains is drained by the mineral water that comes from deep under the grounds of the travertine. The average flow of water through all the cracks of the hot spring is between 5 and 7 litres of hot water per second.

The water from deep within the surface brings calcareous-calcite balls of uniform patterns that are 0.5 cm to 3-4 cm in diameter. The stone rocks come as part of a white mixture of water with limestone, gypsum and chalk.

The Composition Of The Spring

GarmChashma has a number of natural pools of various sizes filled with turquoise hot water containing fluorine, aluminium, magnesium, iron, strontium and other chemical elements.

The spring also contains large quantities of silicic acid (135 mg/l), hydrogen sulphide (170 mg/l) and carbonic acid (381 mg/l).

The Temperature Of The Spring

The temperature of the water that oozes out from the spring is around 62°C at the outlets. However, the temperature of the GaramChashma pool varies between 38°C and 50°C, depending on the distance of the part of the pool from the spring.

The region also highlights carbonaceous crystal springs that have a constant temperature of 14 degrees Celsius. This water is used by the locals for cooking and drinking.

The GarmChashma is a very popular place among the locals and the visitors equally. Pilgrims from all around the world and other areas visit the place as a pilgrimage. The waters of GaramChashma provide a therapeutic impact for those with skin and other health problems.

A tiny little sanatorium is attached to the GarmChashma Spring along with other cafes that are lined up along the spring area. Apart from the tiny sanatorium, the place also owns a Garm-Chashma sanatorium built in 1957. Call us or book your tickets now.
