Kyrgyzstan In Detail

The earliest records of human settlement in the region of Kyrgyzstan date 2,000 years back. The ancient Kyrgyzs were known as Yenisei Kirghiz who lived in central Siberian region near Yenisey River. The region then became a part of the Kushan Empire. In the early medieval period, it was the Turks who first made their mark in this region. Nomadic tribal group of G’kt’rks established the first Turkic state in 552 AD. From the group, Buddhist Uyghur Empire emerged out of the region. After the disintegration of the Empire, branches of it migrated to surrounding areas to form individual settlements. Some of these groups formed a federation with the Muslim institutions that was called Kara-Khanlik. They settled in the region of Kyrgyzstan cities like ancient Balasagun flourished as a economic and cultural center in Central Asia. Following the Mongol invasion in the 13th Century, the territories of Kyrgyzstan got devastated and people lost their independence and came under Mongol Khanates of Golden Horde, Chagatai Khanate, and Oirats. Later, the Kyrgyz people also were ruled by Kalmyk, Manchu, and Uzbek empires. In 1876, the region got annexed to the Russian Empire and Soviet power was established from 1918. From 1920 onwards, Kyrgyzstan saw many cultural, social, and educational exchanges and economic development was also notable. It was announced as an independent state in 1991.

Like its neighoring Central Asian nations, it is a landlocked country and is the farthest from the sea than any other country in the region. It covers an area of 198,500 sq km, and 80% of that is mountains. Tian Shan mountain range cover majority of the area, and 41% of country is located above an elevation of 3,000 meters. The highest point in country is Pamir at 7439 meters followed by Khan -Tengri at 6,995 meters. From the mountains, somewhere about 40,000 big and small rivers and streams emerge and flow downhill. In between the mountains, there are 1,923 mountain lakes. Because of such natural resource, it is often referred to as ‘Switzerland of Central Asia.’
