Tashkent
One of the oldest cities in Central Asia, the city of Tashkent which is the capital of Uzbekistan is an ideal blend of modern cosmopolitan and ancient medieval world. In between the sky-high skyscrapers, you’ll get to see many historical buildings. Tashkent is also an excellent place for recreation where you can find numerous parks, restaurants, and theatres.
Kokand
Kokand situated in the southwestern edge of mountainous Fergana Valley was the main transit point into the Fergana Valley and was the main transportation junction. Today there are many necropolis, museums, and palaces from the ancient era to be explored in Kokand.
Fergana
The capital city of the Fergana Region, it is among the industrialized cities in Uzbekistan where there are oil refineries and fertilizer plants. The city is distinct in that it has a high proportion of Russian population and the colonial-style Tsarist houses can still be seen situated besides tree-shaded avenues.
Margilan
Located in the southern part of Fergana Valley, it was an important stop on the Silk Road route, and as per some legends, was founded by Alexander The Great. It is highly regarded for its silk fabrics and products which are manufactured in the city. These were exported to far lands of Europe, Egypt, and Greece. Today it is the home to Uzbekistan’s largest traditional silk factory.
Rishtan
A small town located in the Fergana Region, it is mostly well-known for its handmade blue-green glazing ceramics. A visit to this town will lead you to centuries-old ceramic production techniques which are still followed to this day along with use of modern machinery.
Nukus
Best known for Nukus Museum of Art which displays diverse range of artifacts and artworks, it is the capital of sole autonomous region in Uzbekistan, Karakalpakstan Republic.
Muynak (Mo‘ynoq)
The desert town of Muynak is an isolated but one of the interesting towns in Muynak where you can see cemetery of ships that are a collection of rusting ships abandoned in the deserts that once used to serve a major thriving fishing town until the Aral Sea dried up.
Khiva
The city of Khiva which is seemingly divided into two separate part, inner and outer part, was established way back at the outset of Christian Era. With over 50 historical monuments to be seen in Khiva, it is an important archaeological point of interest.
Bukhara
The iconic city of Bukhara which has over 140 architectural monuments was the second major intellectual centers in Islamic world, only next to Baghdad. Various mosques, madrasahs, and mausoleums in Bukhara are now listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Nurata
The city of Nurata was founded by Alexander as a military fortress “Nur”which can still be seen in the southern part of the town. It is now a major pilgrimage place where numerous religious figures are buried.
Shakhrisabz
Well known in Uzbekistan as being the birthplace of Amir Timur, it is located 80 Km from Samarkand where impressive monuments from the Timurid Dynasty still remains as historical artifacts.
Samarkand
The ancient city of Samarkand was one of the most prominent cities located along the Silk Road route and was the capital of Timurid Empire founded by Amir Timur. During his reign he constructed many educational institutions and religious mausoleums which are now major point of attraction. Known as “The Crossroad of Cultures,” is now added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Termez
The frontier city of Termez which was a significant city throughout the history of Uzbekistan is the capital of Surxondaryo Region and one of the main tourist centers in the country accommodating numerous archaeological monuments.
