Tajikistan In Brief

Tajikistan is a landlocked country bordered by countries of Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China from all sides. It covers an area of 143,100 sq km, making it the smallest of all the Central Asian nations. Majority of the country is mountainous and is covered by the Pamir mountain range. Almost 50% of the country is located at an elevation of 3,000 meters above sea level. About 2% of the country’s total area is covered with lakes and there are more than 900 rivers which are longer than 10 km in length. The glaciers on these mountains are a major source of water for the Aral Sea.

The history of Tajikistan can be traced back to 4th millennium BC. The region was part of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex of the Bronze Age and Sarazm. Although tenious evidence exist, it is argued by archaeologists that the modern day region of Tajikistan was once part of Kambojas before becoming a portion of Achaemenid Empire. Later, the region was conquered by Alexander the Great who annexed it to Greeko-Bactrian Kingdom. After the opening of the Silk Road route, especially the northern region flourished and became important caravanserais. Later during the Kushan Empire, multiple faiths like Buddhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Manichaeism were practised in the region. Soon after Islam was introduced into the region after the arrival of Arabic nomadic tribes. The region was also temporarily under the influence of Tibetan empire and Mongol empire who brought in their own ideas and culture into the region. The Uzbek also had a mark on Tajikistan when the Emirates and Khanates and both Bukhoro and Kokand ruled some portion of the total region. Lately, it was the Soviet Union which ruled the region and formed the Tajik SSR.
