    Kyrgyzstan In Brief

The history of the region of Kyrgyzstan is more than 2,000 years old. For a long time it was inhabited by independent tribes and clans. But as per archaeological studies, Scythians who were a Eurasian nomadic tribe were the first to have inhabited the area. In the following centuries, they embarked on a process of migration, conquest, intermarriage, and assimilation. Thus, their population is scattered throughout Central Asia. These tribes were overrun by Mongols as part of the Mongol conquest of Central Asia in 17th Century Uzbek's Khanate of Kokand in the 19th Century. It has been at the crossroad of a number of ancient civilizations. The iconic Silk Road route passed through the forested mountain region and developed important trading towns and caravanserais. The trade and cultural exchange through this route brought in various religions like Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Zoroastrianism which were followed in this region. Because of the isolation of this place, the Silk Road customs and practices are still prevalent in this region, although to a lesser extent. It was annexed to Russia during the Russian conquest of Central Asia.

Geographically, it is isolated from the rest of the region in Central Asia by high mountain terrain. Just like its Central Asian counterparts, it is too a landlocked country bordered by lands from all sides. Tian Shan mountain system runs through the region covering 80% of the country's total area. Due to the mountains, it is sometimes referred to as the 'Switzerland of Central Asia.'Because of the rugged mountains, only 8% of the area is used for cultivation which is primarily concentrated in the low lying areas of Fergana Valley. The country does not border with any seas or inland lakes, but from the mountains, there are a number of big and small streams running downhill. Kyrgyzstan also has the second largest mountain lake in the world, Issyk-Kul Lake. The climate is not constant throughout the country. The low lying regions have subtropical climates while, depending upon the elevation, the higher reaches vary from continental to a polar climate.
