Legal Requirements: Registrations and Carry Your Passport

Navigating the legal landscape in Uzbekistan is much simpler in twenty twenty-six than in previous decades, but there are still "Golden Rules" every traveler must follow to avoid heavy fines or delays at the border.

The two pillars of your legal stay are Registration and Identification.

    1. The 72-Hour Registration Rule

Any foreign citizen staying in Uzbekistan for more than three working days (excluding Sundays and public holidays) must be registered with the authorities.

    • Automatic Registration: If you stay in a licensed hotel, hostel, or guesthouse, the staff will handle this for you automatically. Upon check-out, they will provide you with a Registration Slip (a small piece of paper, often with a QR code).
    • Private Stays & Camping: If you are staying with friends, using Couchsurfing, or camping in a tent/vehicle, you are responsible for your own registration via the E-mehmon (Electronic Guest) system. You can do this at emehmon.uz or via the mobile app. You will need to pay a small tourist tax online using a local or international card.
    • The Paper Trail: While the system is largely digital in twenty twenty-six, it is highly recommended to keep physical or digital copies (photos) of all your registration slips. Border guards may request to see a "continuous" record of your stay when you depart the country.

    2. "Carry Your Passport" – Original vs. Digital

In Uzbekistan, your passport is your primary legal shield. You should have proof of identity on you at all times.

    • The Original is King: While police checks are much less frequent now than in the past, an officer is legally entitled to ask for your original passport and registration. Carrying the physical document is the safest practice.
    • The 2025 Digital Shift: As of July twenty twenty-five, Uzbekistan officially recognizes digital copies of identification for many domestic services. You can now use a digital copy or a high-quality scan for:
      1. Checking in for domestic flights and trains.
      2. Entering some government buildings.
      3. General identification in modern urban areas.
    • Pro-Tip: Keep a high-resolution photo of your passport’s main page, your visa (if applicable), and your entry stamp on your phone, but keep the original in a secure, accessible pocket.

    3. Special Status for US Citizens in 2026

A major change took effect on January 1, twenty twenty-six:

    • US Citizens can now enter Uzbekistan visa-free for up to thirty days. This has streamlined entry significantly, but the registration rules mentioned above still apply. You must still be registered by your hotel or via E-mehmon within three days of arrival.

Smooth Travels with Minzifa Travel Legal formalities shouldn't be the focus of your vacation. Minzifa Travel acts as your local legal concierge to ensure you are always "in the green."

    • Verified Accommodations: We only book our guests in licensed hotels that we know have a perfect track record with the E-mehmon system.
    • Independent Support: If your itinerary includes remote camping or private stays, our team can assist you with the E-mehmon registration process to ensure no days are "missed."
    • Departure Assistance: We conduct a "document audit" with you before you head to the airport or border, ensuring every registration slip is in order so your exit is as smooth as your entry.

Focus on the history; let us focus on the paperwork.
