    Kyrgyzstan In Brief

The region had the history of being ruled by a number of empires such as G'kt'rks, the Uyghur Empire, and the Khitan people, Mongols and the empires that descended from it. The first settlement in the region was made 2,000 years back by the Turkic nomadic community of Yenisei Kirghiz. They later came under the rule of G'kt'rks Empire which was the first Turkic state in the region, followed by Uyghur which is first 'Kingdom' emerging out of it. After the Mongol invasion of Central Asia, it came under the Mongol rule which lasted for close to a century. Various Khanates that succeeded the Mongols like the Turkic Golden Horde, Chagatai Khanate, and Oirats later regulated the region. Lastly, it were the Russians who annexed the region into the Soviet Union and it came about to be known as Kirghiz SSR. It gained independence in 1991.

The culture of Kyrgyzstan is a wide mix and variety of different ethnic groups, primarily Turkic and Mongol. In the medieval period, it became a cultural center for ancient Turkic people. The 40 different Kyrgyz clans that once existed in the country are represented by the 40 rays of the sun found in the national flag of the country. The dominant religion of Kyrgyzstan is Sunni Islam which is more than 90%. Today, 53% of the population are ethnic Kyrgyz, 22% are Russians, 14% are Uzbeks, and rest being minority Tatars and Ukrainians.

Kyrgyzstan's topography is mainly mountains. The Tien Shan mountain system runs through the country and covers almost 80% of it. There are over 8 major mountain ranges, most of them of the Tien Shan system. These mountains divide the region into northern and southern part. Even though Kyrgyzstan remained isolated from the rest of the region due to high mountain ranges, nevertheless it was located at an ideal location near to the Tien Shan and Pamir mountains. The caravan routes that passed through it led to the emergence of major cities and staging posts like Osh, Suyab, Tash Rabat, Uzgen among others.
